This first story describes how the series’ two main characters, Badger and Fox, once got so frustrated with their very different ways of doing things, they decided to live apart. But living apart turned out to be no fun at all, and soon they were back together again with a new appreciation of each other. The story establishes the importance of the friendship that lies at the heart of the 24 stories that follow, roughly one for each month of the year in two cycles.

“Every day the two friends missed each other a little more. Badger would often invite Fox to come to her den to play because that meant she would have lots to do when Fox left. And Fox would often invite Badger to her den because then Badger could help her find all the things she’d lost. On those days when they couldn’t visit each other, neither was very happy.”
